Woman killed after big rig trailer crushes car in Martinez driveway

MARTINEZ, Calif. (BCN) – A woman was killed when a gravel truck overturned onto her car in Martinez Monday afternoon, according to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The California Highway Patrol reported the accident at 1:05 p.m. near the intersection of Shell Avenue and Pine Street.

Martinez police told Cal/OSHA investigators that an employee from JJR Construction driving a truck filled with gravel asked a woman to move her car in the area of 820 Shell Ave., according to Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Julia Bernstein.

After she got into the car to move it, the truck's gravel load fell over the right side, crushing her inside the car, according to the initial reports to Cal/OSHA.

Investigators from Cal/OSHA's American Canyon office have responded to the scene, Bernstein said.

San Mateo-based JJR Construction was cited in 2010 by Cal/OSHA for a minor safety violation, Bernstein said. It's the company's only citation in the last five years.

Martinez police did not immediately return calls for further information on the incident.
