Olympic swimmer dies after collapsing at California beach
Richard Thornton, an Olympic swimmer and Bay Area swim coach, collapsed and died after stepping into the water in Santa Cruz to surf. Thornton was on the 1980 US Olympic swim team that boycotted the Moscow games and coached a swim team in San Ramon for decades.
