Landmark restaurant in Oakland's Jack London Square area closes.
The customers, former co-workers, and family came to say good-bye to Derreck Johnson and his landmark Home of Chicken and Waffles restaurant, a Black-owned business known as a late-night food and drink stop for decades, serving celebrities and politicians as well as Oakland residents alike. The final day was August 31. He credits mentors and said he's proud of the staff who have worked hard.
