On 9/11, John Bridgeland had a firsthand view of the White House response, from the first reports of the attacks to the evacuation of the West Wing and the emergency declaration signed by President Bush. He later became the first director of USA Freedom Corps, focused on channeling the extraordinary surge of Americans who wanted to serve after the attacks.
