5 inmates hospitalized after 5-car crash involving sheriff's bus

Five Santa Clara County jail inmates were hospitalized with minor injuries after a sheriff's office van was involved in a five-car crash on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in San Jose Thursday morning.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash at 7:20 a.m. and found a Toyota Prius had fully ignited in a crash while attempting to switch lanes just north of Brokaw Road.

It was traveling south on Highway 880 when it hit a Toyota RAV4, spun out of control into the leftmost lane and struck the sheriff's transport bus. Several inmates were in the vehicle.

Due to the impact, the RAV4 also hit a white Honda Civic and a black Honda Civic.

Lanes were closed for about an hour and 40 minutes, and five inmates were taken to a hospital. Two sheriff's deputies had minor injuries, but did not need to be hospitalized.

The remaining inmates were transferred to a second bus and lanes were reopened by about 9 a.m., according to the CHP. No other injuries were reported.
