5-year-old seriously injured in Richmond shooting
RICHMOND, Calif. (KTVU) - Investigators in Richmond are asking for the public's help to find the suspect or suspects in a drive-by shooting Tuesday night that injured a man and his 5-year old son.
"There's still much work to be done in Richmond, I don't think anybody would dispute that," said Police Chief Chris Magnus at a news conference talking about the work he's done to curb crime in Richmond before he leaves for a new job in Tucson. "Last night we had an ugly shooting. It highlights the fact that this is always going to be a work in progress."
The shooting happened at 7:44 p.m. near the intersection of South 37th and Wall Avenues. Several witnesses called 911. Richmond's ShotSpotter also picked up the gunfire.
Stanley Williams was at the hospital with his one year old daughter Tuesday night when the father and son who were shot rushed in.
"They came in, they were bleeding," Williams said. "And we saw a car when we went out [of the hospital] had bullet holes."
Police said both father and son are expected to survive. Police are trying to enhance surveillance video of the area to see if it holds any clues. Right now there are no suspects and no motive. Witnesses report seeing a white vehicle speed away from the shooting, possibly an early 2000's model Oldsmobile.
"These little kids is getting hit, wow," remarked Todd Walker, a youth mentor in Richmond. "Nothing is going to stop until we get the guns off the street."
The shattered car window glass in the street and crime scene tape that flaps in the wind will eventually be taken down, but Walker said that doesn't mean everything is okay.
"Ain't nothing sacred anymore," Walker said shaking his head. "Every time you turn on the TV there's gunshots. A baby 5-years old will never be okay being hit by a bullet."
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Richmond police.
