8-month-old girl killed, several children critically injured in Sonoma County: CHP

An eight-month old baby girl died and several children were critically injured on Thursday night in a head-on collision in Sonoma County, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP Officer Jonathan Sloat said in a statement the accident was reported at 8:12 p.m. on Lakeville Highway, near Old Lakeville #2, involving three vehicles.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a silver VW Jetta driven by an 18-year-old of Granite Bay, was traveling northbound on Lakeville Highway, when for unknown reasons, he crossed over the solid double yellow lines, into the southbound lane.
His VW collided with a white Ford Explorer driven by a 31-year-old Folsom woman, who was traveling southbound. The Explorer was thrown to the right and it smashed into a tree, Sloat said. The VW spun out of control and hit a blue Honda Civic, driven by a 25-year-old Fairfield man, who was also traveling southbound.
As a result of the collision, Sloat said several children seated in the rear of the Explorer were critically injured.
The children were immediately transported to hospitals in Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Oakland, but an 8-month-old baby girl died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision, Sloat said.
The drivers of all three cars were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
