Albany's 1st homicide since 2015: Man dies of gunshot wound at popular Ohlone Greenway

ALBANY, Calif. - Albany police are looking for potential witnesses as they investigate their first homicide since 2015.

The death was reported on Sunday about 11:30 a.m. along the popular Ohlone Greenway where many people walk and run and which runs through a residential neighborhood directly under the BART tracks.

At first, the man was found sitting on a bench near Portland and Garfield avenues, suffering from a gunshot wound. But he died later, after paramedics took him to the hospital.

"Whoever shot him, for whatever reason, I forgive them," said Lynda Clemons, who identified herself as the victim's mother. "But I do need them to turn themselves in. Because no one has a right to take another person's life."

Clemons said her 23-year-old son, Raphael Fuentes-Lee, was mentally ill and living on the streets. She said she last spoke to her son in January. 

"I said, be careful. please come home. He said he didn't want to come home. He said he liked being out, talking to people."

That section of the greenway was closed for most of the day on Sunday during the police investigation. Albany Police are investigating the death as a homicide and are asking any potential witnesses to come forward.
