Authorities investigate death of man detained at Concord homeless shelter

An investigation is underway into the death of a man after he was detained by police officers and a sheriff's deputy at the Concord Homeless Shelter on Friday afternoon, according to police officials.

Police said the call first came in around 4 p.m. at the shelter at 2047 Arnold Industrial Way. According to police, several staff members placed 911 calls to report a man acting erratically, yelling and being violent.

As he was being detained, police said the suspect - who wasn't identified - continued to behave erratically while being taken into custody, and eventually showed signs of medical distress.

Paramedics arrived to render aid, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

Because the death occurred while the suspect was in custody, the Contra Costa County Law Enforcement-Involved Fatal Incident Protocol was invoked, and Concord police, the district attorney's office and the sheriff's office will jointly investigate the case.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact Concord Police Department Detective Giacoletto at (925) 671-3040. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call (925) 603-5386.
