Baby dropped off at Oakland hospital

Earlier Tuesday police believed a newborn baby was found abandoned in Oakland. They have since learned they were given a false report.

Two women reported the baby was found wrapped in cloth near 19th Avenue and East 27th Street, which is near Highland Hospital.

Authorities have since learned the women were the mother's sister and a friend. The mother did not want to keep the baby so they were taking it to the hospital. According to authorities, the baby was never found on the street and the woman made up the story because they were worried about getting in trouble for dropping the baby off at the hospital.

The newborn is doing fine, according to police. It's unclear if authorities have talked to the baby's mother.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact Oakland Police Department's Special Victims Section at 510-238-3641.

At this point, additional details have not been released.
