Belmont police are investigating a possible attempted kidnapping after a man tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his truck on Monday, according to police.

Investigators say the girl was walking on Hiller St. near Biddulph Way at around 3:40pm, on her way home in the Sterling Downs neighborhood, when a man in a pick-up pulled up beside her and tried to get her to come over.

The girl told police that she ran away toward her home.

The man then made a U-turn and began to drive northbound on Hiller St.

The truck never approached the girl again.

She made it home safely and reported the incident to her mother who took her to the police, investigators said.

The man is described as Latino in his late forties, with short, straight hair.

The girl told police the vehicle he was in was an older, rusty brown pick-up truck with peeling paint and a possible ladder rack.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Belmont Police at (650) 595-7400.

Investigators are also reaching out to residents in the area asking them to check their home video surveillance systems to see if they captured any images of the man and/or his truck.
