BENICIA (KTVU) -- A Benicia high school teacher was arrested Monday on charges that she allegedly had an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student, police said.

Riana Lane, 23, of Benicia, and a teacher at Benicia High School, turned herself in on charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and oral copulation with a minor, police said in a written statement.

Detectives learned about the inappropriate teacher-student relationship during an investigation in April about marijuana possession on campus and stolen property incidents that had been reported at the school in March, police said in a written statement.

On April 7, the teen was seen leaving the school campus several times and going to the teacher's parked car. After being called to the scene, detectives found a small amount of edible marijuana in the vehicle as well as stolen property from vehicles that had been reported in Benicia on March 23 and March 28.

Police said Lane admitted to possessing the marijuana that was found in her car. She was cited for misdemeanor possession of stolen property and possession of marijuana on a school campus.

Police said the teen student admitted to stealing the items from the vehicles and placing the items inside Lane's car. He was arrested for petty theft before being released to the custody of his parent, police said in a social media post. Police declined to identify him because he is a juvenile.

School officials were not immediately available for a comment.
