Berkeley PD ID San Leandro student found dead on campus Saturday

Body found inside Berkeley fraternity

Berkeley police identified the 22-year-old fraternity member whose death at Pi Kappa Phi on Saturday was initially deemed suspicious.

On Saturday, just before 7:30 a.m., Berkeley police and fire department responded to 2908 Channing Way to a report of an unresponsive male at the fraternity. The victim, Jeffrey Thomas Engler, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Engler was from San Leandro, but was enrolled at Laney College and had previously attended UC Berkeley. While he was a member of the fraternity, he did not reside on campus and was attending a holiday party.

According to the preliminary investigation, police said it appears Engler fell from a significant height prior to his death and that alcohol appears to have been a factor.

Foul play does not appear to have been a factor in this case according to Berkeley police.

The cause of death will be determined by the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.
