Bomb Squad Investigating suspicious backpack fire on Hwy 280

The San Mateo County Sheriff's bomb squad is investigating a suspicious backpack that caught fire on Interstate Highway 280 near Redwood City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was first reported around 6:43 p.m. on northbound Highway 280 near Edgewood Road.

The CHP says the fire is out, but the backpack needs to be x-rayed to ensure that it can be safely removed from the roadway.

A Sig-alert was issued at 7:04 p.m. for all northbound lanes of the roadway, which are expected to remain closed until at least 8:15 p.m.

Traffic is being diverted at Farm Hill Boulevard. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
