Boy hit by car and killed at San Jose mall

A 6-year-old boy was holding his mom's hand when he was struck by a car and killed Thursday night at the Westfield Oakridge Mall in San Jose.

He was walking with his family at the parking lot, near the Century 20 Oakridge Theater, when he was hit, according to authorities. The car was traveling at a slow speed. 

The boy, identified as Aniket Gadre of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office, was rushed to the hospital, but could not be saved. .

San Jose Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit is handling the case.

Officers say the driver stopped, and has been cooperative.

"It's very tragic," said Lt. Derek Chen, San Jose Police Department. "When you deal with juvenile deaths, it's even more. The officers are dealing with it on the scene. But for obvious reasons, it's very difficult."

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

Officers say it's too early to tell if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
