Bridge and BART closures plague holiday weekend traffic

BAY AREA (KTVU) -- The holiday weekend paired with the San Mateo Bridge closure and a BART shutdown will make getting around the Bay Area a challenge this Memorial Day weekend.

The San Mateo Bridge closed at 10 p.m. Friday for repaving work. The closure will last through 5 a.m. Monday.

Drivers are being detoured around the closure, which is expected to lead to some serious backups.

The bridge was shut down a couple weeks ago for construction work and traffic was a nightmare, especially on the Bay Bridge.

In addition to the bridge closure, there will be no service on BART between Fruitvale and Coliseum stations on Saturday and Sunday. A free bus bridge will carry riders between those two stations.

And on Saturday, BART will also close the Fremont to Daly City line. So passengers who need to go to San Francisco will have to transfer to a Dublin to Daly City train in the East Bay.

BART is warning riders to account for extra time in their travel plans. Bay Area drivers should probably expect the same.
