A California woman was arrested on allegations of animal cruelty after 27 horses were found dead on her property and several others were discovered malnourished, according to sheriff’s officials.

Animal neglect

What we know:

San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputies and animal services officers executed a search warrant Wednesday in Clements as part of an ongoing investigation into animal neglect.

During the search of multiple properties, authorities found several malnourished horses with limited access to food or water, along with the remains of 27 horses, the sheriff’s office said.

Animal services officers and veterinarians evaluated the surviving horses and 16 were rescued. They are now in the care of Oakdale Equine Rescue, which is providing nutrition, medical attention, and rehabilitation.

Four other horses and one bull were euthanized due to extreme neglect, officials said.

Criminal charges

The suspect, identified as Jan Johnson, was arrested on charges of animal cruelty, threatening a public official, and making criminal threats.
