Caltrain hits, kills person on tracks in Redwood City
REDWOOD CITY (BCN) A southbound Caltrain struck and killed a man on the tracks this evening at the Brewster Avenue grade crossing in Redwood City, closing one of two Caltrain tracks for about 45 minutes and resulting in significant delays, a San Mateo County Transit District spokeswoman said.
The accident occurred at 5:09 p.m. when southbound train No. 366 struck the man at the crossing. The man was described by spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew as a trespasser.
None of the 454 people on the train was injured, she said. Both tracks were closed for 27 minutes; the northbound track was reopened at 5:36 p.m., and the southbound track at 5:56 p.m. Trains continued to move at restricted speed through the Brewster Avenue area.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Transit Police Bureau, which patrols the Caltrain corridor, is investigating the accident, resulting in Caltrain's fifth fatality of 2018.
