Charges against carjacking suspect, Bay Bridge jumper announced

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) - A man who led police on a chase Saturday through San Francisco and leapt from the upper to the lower deck of the Bay Bridge to escape will be charged with nine felonies and three misdemeanors, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office said Wednesday.
The charges against Randal Maykopet, 24, include assault on a police officer and carjacking, prosecutors said.
Maykopet will be arraigned Thursday at 1:30 p.m., according to prosecutors.
Maykopet fled in a police SUV after officers responded to a report of a man armed with a knife at about 8:20 a.m. Saturday to the area near Chestnut and Lyon streets in the city's Cow Hollow neighborhood, police said.
Officers tried to detain Maykopet but he ran and drove off in the SUV before an officer could stop him, police said.
Maykopet hit several civilian vehicles in trying to evade police as they chased him through the city, according to police.
Maykopet drove to Treasure Island where he evaded police again when they closed a gate to stop him, police said.
He drove onto the sidewalk and then onto the westbound ramp of Interstate Highway 80 where he hit another vehicle before jumping from the upper to the lower deck of the Bay Bridge, according to police.
An officer arrested Maykopet after making the same jump, police said.
Maykopet has been charged with two felony counts of assault on a police officer, one felony count of carjacking, one count of felony attempted carjacking, and among others, two counts of felony evading an officer, prosecutors said.
