CHP: Man killed on I-880 had stepped out of car after crash

A 34-year-old man was killed on Interstate Highway 880 in Fremont early Saturday after he stepped out of his car following a crash with another vehicle and then was struck in a second collision, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday.

John Paul Sugiyama was driving north on I-880 near South Fremont Boulevard just after 2 a.m. when he rear-ended a vehicle in front of him, according to the CHP.

Sugiyama's vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Corolla, came to a stop in the left lane after the collision and Sugiyama stepped out of his vehicle, CHP officials said.

He was then struck when a 20-year-old Fremont man in a 2004 Honda Accord hit the Toyota, causing it to rotate across the road into Sugiyama, according to the CHP.

Sugiyama, identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as a Redwood City resident, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision blocked northbound lanes of the highway until 5:18 a.m., CHP officials said.
