Concord apartment guardrail being looked at after baby falls from 2nd floor
CONCORD (BCN) - A possible guardrail failure is being investigated after an 11-month-old baby fell Tuesday afternoon from a second-floor walkway in a Concord apartment complex, according to police.
Around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, officers were dispatched to a two-story apartment complex in the 1600 block of Frisbie Court, where a small child had fallen onto hard pavement.
The boy was found to be conscious and was transported to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland by helicopter, police said.
Concord police Cpl. Chris Blakely confirmed today that there were questions raised about how well the apartment's guardrail on the second story was maintained or if it had a gap big enough for a child to fall through.
The railing has been boarded up as a safety precaution, Blakely said.
Building inspectors from the city of Concord have been called in to investigate the structural concerns further, he said.
City spokeswoman Leslye Asera was not able to provide any more information this morning about that inspection.
