Classes canceled at Vallejo school following copper theft, cutting off electricity
VALLEJO, Calif. - A school in Vallejo is left without power after copper wire was stolen from the building, shutting down operations.
Officials said the theft occurred sometime between Friday evening and early Saturday at the Solano Widenmann Leadership Academy. Staff with the Vallejo City Unified School District learned of the theft as they were readying to host a basketball competition.
The Vallejo Police Department is investigating the theft.
"We are deeply saddened and frustrated that this has happened again to one of our schools," VCUSD said in a statement. "These incidents disrupt learning and negatively impact our families and the entire school community."
Officials said they are also taking steps to strengthen their security measures.
A letter sent to parents by Superintendent Ruben Aurelio said classes will be canceled until further notice as they address the issue and work towards a solution.
Aurelio said the school's closure is likely to last around a week while repairs occur.
What's next:
"We want to assure you that we have already begun working with a company to address and repair the damage. The team is committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible to ensure the safe reopening of the campus," Aurelio said.
Should the closure last more than a week, the superintendent said arrangements will be made for students "to ensure their education continues with minimal disruption."
