Coroner id's man hit by two vehicles including Clayton police car

Contra Costa County coroner's officials on Tuesday identified a man found dead on a street, after being struck by two vehicles, including a police patrol car.

Investigators said the victim, 29-year-old Robert Smith, was first struck at about 2:30 Monday morning near the Concord Pavilion on Kirker Pass Road near Kirkwood Drive.

The driver pulled over and called 911.

Then as the man lay in the road, a Clayton police officer, who was en route to an unrelated call also struck the man with his car.

Investigators said it appears the first vehicle killed the victim, but the coroner's office will help determine the exact cause and time of death.

Both the civilian driver and the Clayton officer are cooperating with the investigation and drugs or alcohol don't appear to be a factor, police said.
