BERKELEY (BCN) - Firefighters rescued a person who was caught under a train Sunday morning at the Downtown Berkeley BART station, resulting in a station closure and major delays on the Richmond line.

The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m., and BART officials closed the station at 8:38 a.m.

As of 9:05 a.m., spokeswoman Denise Gonzalez said that the victim was injured but alive, and was being transported to Highland Hospital.

Trains are not currently stopping at the Downtown Berkeley station, according to Gonzalez, and a 20-minute delay is affecting passengers on the Richmond line.

Other lines remain unaffected, however.

A bus bridge has been established between the North Berkeley and Ashby stations with the assistance of buses from the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, Gonzalez said, and BART officials are preparing to reopen the Downtown Berkeley station.
