A deadly crash on Northbound Interstate 880 near the Oakland Coliseum created a massive traffic problem for drivers Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol first reported the crash at around 3:42A.M. on the north side of the freeway just south of the Oakland Coliseum.

Shortly after it was first reported, CHP officers completely shut down the north side of the freeway and began diverting traffic off the road at 66th Avenue.

A CHP told KTVU that a car travelling northbound hit a person walking across the freeway.

That person was hit and killed.

Investigators say it's not clear why the victim was on the freeway to begin with.

The driver that hit the person stopped at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.

The CHP was able to re-open all lanes of the freeway just after 5:00 a.m.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
