Death on BART tracks caused earlier closure at Powell Street station

BART's Powell Street station in San Francisco was closed for three hours today after a person was struck and killed by a train, a BART spokeswoman said.

"We did have a person enter the trackway and unfortunately they died," BART spokeswoman Cheryl Stalter said.

"The coroner has come, the investigation is cleared," Stalter said.

A major medical emergency was declared and shut the station down Saturday morning. Police had reported that there was a person under the train.

Powell Street staion re-opened around 1:30 pm., but passengers still experienced major delays through the afternoon. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency was providing mutual aid for BART passengers in downtown San Francisco, transit officials said at 11:09 a.m.
