Deputies shoot armed suspect during search warrant operation

Sheriff's deputies shot a 36-year-old man early this morning after he allegedly shot at a sheriff's SWAT team while they were serving a search and arrest warrant at a Monterey motel, according to sheriff's officials.

Around 1:20 a.m., the sheriff's SWAT team arrived at the Casa Verde Inn at 2113 Fremont St., sheriff's officials said.

The suspect, Paulo Barcenas, was reportedly wanted for a homicide, according to sheriff's officials.

As deputies attempted to serve the warrant, Barcenas allegedly shot at deputies.

A bomb squad was called to deploy a robot into Barcena's room.

Barcenas then shot at the robot and at deputies again, according to sheriff's officials. In order to protect the public and other deputies, a deputy then fired back at Barcenas, wounding him.

Barcenas was arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment, sheriff's officials said. It was not immediately clear if any deputies were injured during the shooting.

Additionally, information about the homicide connected to Barcenas' arrest was not immediately available.
