Driver arrested after barreling through Bay Bridge construction zone, leading CHP on 3-county chase
PLEASANT HILL, Calif. - A man iin his 20s was arrested Tuesday morning after leading the California Highway Patrol on a high-speed pursuit from the Bay Bridge to Pleasant Hill.
The CHP identified him as Edgardo Chavez Ascencion of San Francisco.
A van came barreling through a construction zone on the Bay Bridge about 1 a.m. nearly hitting workers and a CHP patrol car, Sgt. Jay Brazil said. The man behind the wheel refused to pull over, police say, and the chase was on. The pursuit went east along Interstate Highway 80, Interstate Highway 580, Highway 24 and then onto northbound Interstate Highway 680.
The CHP says the driver of that van reached speeds of 90 miles per hour.
Finally, the chase came to an end when the driver turned onto Wendy Drive, a dead-end street in Pleasant Hill. Officers pulled the man from the car, used a Taser on him and took him to the ground.
The signs on the van doors say "Black Rock City Public Works Department." That’s the group in charge of building the temporary city in the Nevada desert for the annual Burning Man gathering. It's unclear if the driver has any connection to the event. Police say that the van is not coming up as stolen.
