Police fired shots into a stolen car after the driver allegedly backed into an officer who was out of his vehicle during an arrest in Antioch this afternoon.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Plymouth Lane at Hillcrest Avenue.

Officers saw a suspect getting into a stolen Mercedes-Benz and converged on the vehicle to take him into custody.

While police were ordering him to get out and surrender - the suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Ryan Kary of Lafayette - backed the car into an officer and struck his vehicle.

The officer shot at the Mercedes-Benz, but Kary wasn't struck by gunfire. He indicated he was giving up and they pulled him out of the stolen car.

Kary was treated at the scene for minor injuries he suffered while struggling with officers, according to police, then arrested on suspicion of auto theft and assault with a deadly weapon on an officer.

The officer he backed into was apparently uninjured, police said, and nobody was struck by the officer's gunfire.
