Events and deals to honor Veterans
Bay Area veterans may choose to celebrate their respective Veterans Day restfully at home or out and about – we’ve compiled a list of events and special Veterans Day deals.
Alameda
The USS Hornet Museum will host a special Veterans Day ceremony November 11th.
The ceremony will take place onboard the Bay Area's famous "floating museum" at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11th.
Immediately following the ceremony, the hornet will present guest speaker and WWII veteran Clark Strickland of Pittsburg, California.
Strickland served as an enlisted seaman on the USS fuller from 1943-1945, which was a combat transport vessel that landed American troops in Guadalcanal. He received the freedom medal for his service in the pacific.
On Wednesday the hornet will be open to the public from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Veterans Day admission is $20 for adults, $15 for adults with military ID and $10 for youth age 7-17 (age 6 and under are free with paying adult). In recognition of their service to our country, military veterans wearing their unit jackets, hats, or showing proper identification at the ticket desk will receive complimentary admission.
Castro Valley
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at the Castro Valley Community Center from 11 a.m. to noon.
It’s located at 18988 Lake Chabot Road.
Cupertino
Veterans Day Ceremony at 111 a.m. at Memorial Park
Lafayette
A Veteran's Day memorial vigil will be held at the crosses of Lafayette on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Congressman Mark Desaulnier is scheduled to attend this event along with other speakers.
The crosses are located across from the Lafayette BART station on Deer Hill Road. Parking is available at the BART station.
All are welcome to attend.
Mountain View
A Veterans memorial will be unveiled at Eagle Park on Veterans Day.
The ceremony will include the unveiling of the city's Veterans recognition plaque and 17 large, granite plaques engraved with the names of veterans and donors.
It takes place from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Eagle Park on Franklin Street.
Petaluma
There will be a Veterans Day parade and flyover at 1 p.m.
San Francisco
Zoo
The San Francisco Zoo & Gardens will host its annual free admission day for veterans and active military personnel Wednesday for Veterans Day starting at 10 a.m.
The zoo will be extending free admission, a lunch, and a guided tour to veterans and active military personnel with valid service id,
In addition, the zoo will offer a 10% discount on annual memberships to veterans and military personnel on Wednesday, according to San Francisco Zoo & Gardens spokesman Danny Latham.
"We want to show our appreciation for all they've done," Latham said.
Yosemite National Park, calif
Yosemite National Park will waive its entrance fee on Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day - along with all other national parks.
Free concert
A free concert will be held to honor Veterans
It takes place at Herbst Theater at 401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
