Former MSU dean had video of Nassar 'treatment' on work computer: charges

A former college dean at Michigan State University, who was charged Tuesday with neglect and sexual misconduct, had videos of Larry Nassar's "treatments" on his University-issued computer, a Michigan State Police detective said in an affidavit.

Nude images were also found on William Strampel's computer, according to the affidavit, which said the images weren't medical in nature and were believed to be of MSU students.

Strampel is the former Dean of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic, and supervised Nassar for nearly 15 years. He was charged Tuesday after a special investigation was launched in January into how the university handled complaints against the former sports doctor, who for years sexually abused girls and young women, especially gymnasts.

Strampel, 70, has been charged with fourth-degree sexual misconduct; common law offenses; and two counts of willful neglect of duty.

On Tuesday, in a press conference, special prosecutor Bill Forsyth said one neglect charge relates to Strampel allowing Nassar to continue seeing patients before the Title IX complaint investigation was finished; and the second charge is for failing to enforce protocols, like making Nassar wear surgical gloves or requiring a third person in the room during an appointment.

Nassar's ex MSU boss facing neglect, criminal sexual conduct charges

The affidavit, which alleges Strampel solicited nude photos from at least one female medical student, said he used his office to "harass, discriminate, demean, sexually proposition, and sexually assault female students in violation of his statutory duty as a public officer."

The affidavit says about 50 photos were found on his computer, and contained female genitalia, nude and semi-nude women, sex toys and pornography. Pornographic videos and a video of Nassar performing "treatment" on a young female patient were also found, the affidavit states.

Strampel is also accused of grabbing students' buttocks at the college's annual ball and a scholarship dinner.

The maximum penalty for the charges ranges from one year in jail to five years in prison. Nassar, 54, pleaded guilty to molesting patients and possessing child pornography and is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison.

In February, interim Michigan State President John Engler announced plans to fire Strampel, who still has tenure that protects his employment as a faculty member.

More than 250 girls and women have sued Michigan State, Strampel and other current and former university officials, USA Gymnastics -- where Nassar also worked -- and others. Roughly 200 women gave statements in two courtrooms over 10 days of proceedings.

A Michigan State spokeswoman said the university would continue cooperating with any investigations and pointed to Engler's past statements.

"William Strampel did not act with the level of professionalism we expect from individuals who hold senior leadership positions, particularly in a position that involves student and patient safety," Engler said last month.
