Health officials testing Dungeness crab early this season

State health officials are already conducting safety tests on Dungeness crabs.

Crab season doesn’t potentially start until November 6th, but last year, almost all of the crab season was canceled after crabs showed extremely high levels of domoic acid for several months.

That acid can cause sickness or even death in people who eat a tainted crab.

State safety officials say some early samples this year have shown domoic acid, but the levels are normal for this time of year.

State officials will decide at the end of October if crab season will start on schedule.
