MILPITAS (KTVU) -- Police shot and wounded a San Jose man early Friday after a traffic stop near Interstate 680 went awry, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. near the on-ramp to I-680 and Calaveras Boulevard. Police said the unidentified officer pulled the 27-year-old man's Cadillac over at the parking lot of the Executive Inn Hotel on Dempsey Road.

It was not immediately clear what happened but the traffic stop escalated into gunfire as the officer opened fire on the man. The suspect fled from the scene on foot, running across Calaveras Boulevard, near the northbound 680 on-ramp, but he was before being caught.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he was said to be in stable condition with non-life threatening wounds. His identity was not released although investigators said he had three outstanding warrants.

It was not clear what prompted the traffic stop. Guests at the hotel said they heard gunfire during the overnight incident and were startled by the commotion.

The event slowed motorists in the area as police closed access to the hotel parking lot, and the 680 on-ramp, to conduct their investigation.

The identity of the officer was not immediately released.
