Surviving suspects in shootout at Oakland gold shop could face murder charges in deaths of 2 associates
Two suspects were killed, three other suspects and the store owner were hurt in a wild shootout at an East Oakland cash-for-gold shop. The surviving suspects could face murder charges, police say.
OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland police on Thursday addressed what occurred at Eddy Cash 4 Gold, where a shop owner exchanged gunfire with five attempted robbery suspects and two of them died.
The shooting occurred on Wednesday about 7:45 p.m. at the shop, located at 7100 International Boulevard.
New information
Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell said at a Thursday afternoon news conference that five masked and armed suspects entered the store in an attempted robbery.
"During this attempted robbery, five of the subjects were struck by gunfire," Mitchell said. "Two of the subject died of their injuries last night, and the other three were transported to local hospitals."
OPD Interim Deputy Chief Nick Calonge said the shooting occurred after the five suspects entered and "began to assault the employees inside."
Police said a worker inside triggered a silent alarm moments before the exchange of gunfire began.
Calonge added that the silent alarm was followed by several emergency calls reporting a shooting at the store.
Mitchell added that one of the two workers inside the store – both of whom were armed and exchanged gunfire with the suspected thieves – also suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
A source told KTVU that the shop owner was shot and is recovering in the hospital. A friend of the shop owner said he was expected to be OK. Police identified the two workers in the store only as employees.
Cellphone video exists
Cellphone video showed the wounded store worker giving a thumbs-up to onlookers as paramedics wheeled him into an ambulance.
Police said one of the suspects died inside the business and the other died at the hospital.
The other three suspects were taken to hospitals for treatment before being turned over to police custody.
KTVU has learned two of the suspects booked on suspicion of murder were Deshawn Tyson, 26, and Charles Gaston III, 28. Police did not identify any of the suspects but said the two who died were men. One suspect was a 17-year-old boy. All the suspects were reported to have been from Stockton.
Oakland police said the three surviving suspects were booked into jail on suspicion of armed robbery and murder, because authorities "believe that their compatriots were responsible for their deaths."
Employees not arrested
Police said the employees of the shop were not arrested.
Mitchell added that the final determination on what the suspects would ultimately be charged with would be made by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
In a statement, Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said what happened was "tragic, unacceptable and outrageous."
Lee added, "We remain commited to our public safety investments and working around the clock with law enforcement and community partners."
The shooting prompted a major police response and drew out many residents to take photos and inquire what was going on.
