Lunar New Year fireworks spark San Jose mall fire

Fireworks for the lunar new year, may have sparked a fire Monday night at a San Jose shopping mall.

Several people posted clips of the fireworks and the fire on social media.

It was first reported at 8:37 p.m.,at the Grand Century Shopping Mal' on 1111 Story Road.

The fire briefly went to a second alarm, as crews headed to the scene, spotted heavy smoke.

Crews canceled the second alarm, when they arrived and found that they could put the flames out without calling for additional support.

The fire was brought under control at 8:59 p.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but witnesses believe it was sparked by the lunar new year fireworks.

Firefighters say this case is a reminder of the dangers of setting off illegal fireworks.

Fireworks have been illegal within the City of San Jose since 1984.
