Man arrested after attacking wife, barricading self with son

SUNNYVALE (BCN) - A 39-year-old man was arrested in Sunnyvale on Friday after allegedly attacking his wife, pointing a gun at her, and then barricading himself inside their apartment with their 3-year-old son, public safety officials said today.

Officers responded at about 12:55 p.m. Friday to the 200 block of  East Evelyn Avenue on a report of a domestic violence case involving Riyad Bacchus and his 34-year-old wife.

After Bacchus allegedly attacked her and pointed a gun at her, she fled and called 911. Bacchus remained in the apartment with their son and officers surrounded the unit and evacuated surrounding departments, public safety officials said.

Hostage negotiators contacted Bacchus, who initially refused to come out but eventually surrendered about 45 minutes later, coming out unarmed with his son, public safety officials said.

A loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was found in the apartment and investigators later found a second handgun there as well.

Bacchus' wife was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries and was later released. The 3-year-old son was uninjured, public safety officials said.

Bacchus was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, sexual assault, child imprisonment, false imprisonment, and domestic violence.
