Man arrested for murder in Martinez shooting

A suspect is in jail on suspicion of murder on more than $2 million bail in the shooting of a woman in unincorporated Martinez Saturday night, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said this morning.

Anthony Shepard, 47, of Concord, has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department. Shepard is being held in lieu of $2,050,000 bail, Lee said.

Deputy sheriffs responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Santa Fe Avenue in unincorporated Martinez around 8:30 p.m. after a caller said a person had been accidentally shot, Lee said.

The deputies found a 58-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Lee. The deputies gave the woman medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee said.

Detectives are investigating the shooting to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting, according to Lee.
