Man found fatally shot near Oakland park trail

A homicide investigation is underway in Oakland after a man was found shot to death on the San Francisco Bay trail near the Oakland estuary.

The body was found about 9 a.m. Tuesday by a citizen in a grassy area off of the San Francisco Bay Trail just east of Damon Slough.

According to authorities the victim was a Hispanic male in his twenties. The man has not yet been identified.

It's unclear whether the man had been shot at that location or attacked somewhere else before his body was dumped on park district property.

Park spokeswoman Carolyn Jones said this is the third homicide on district property so far this year.

"It's a huge shock obviously, you know, murders in the Park District are extremely rare," said Jones. "This is a shock to everybody. A cause for great concern, obviously."

Once Oakland police confirmed the crime scene was within the Park District, the investigation was turned over to the East Bay Regional Park District police.

The discovery was a big shock to Laurence Frieden who rides along the trail every week. "It makes you feel a little bit unsafe," he said. I think for me to ride, it's fairly safe. It's okay, but I wouldn't let my kids ride here.
