POT GROW SHOOTOUT: A man was hurt early Monday during a wild shootout at an illegal pot grow at a Fremont home, police said.

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Delaware. One caller said he heard loud yelling, several gunshots and then the sound of a vehicle speeding away. Officers responded but didn't find anything at first.

But that changed at about 2:15 a.m. when police learned that a 28-year-old Oakland man was being treated for a gunshot wound at a San Leandro hospital. The victim, whose name wasn't released, is expected to survive, authorities said.

Police determined that the shooting happened at a home on the 42900 block of Fremont Boulevard. Outside, officers found a blood trail and a parked vehicle with a window shot out.

Inside the home, police uncovered a large-scale marijuana growing operation with hundreds of plants at different stages of growth. The windows of the home had been boarded up, and the plants were being grown with a sophisticated ventilation and lighting system, police said.

Investigators concluded that the victim and a number of others were at the home when several masked men tried to force their way inside. A shootout happened between the would-be invaders and the marijuana growers.

"Evidence at the scene suggests that at least eight rounds were fired from at least two different firearms," police said.

The suspects fled the scene. No description of the men or their car was available.

DRUGS ARE CAT'S MEOW FOR VET BURGLAR: El Cerrito police are trying to identify a cat burglar who broke into a veterinary hospital to steal antibiotics.

The man forced his way inside the El Cerrito Pet Hospital at 11800 San Pablo Ave. early Nov. 3. Officers responding to a burglar alarm didn't find the intruder there but determined that he had stolen "several types of antibiotics."

A video of the break-in can be found here. Anyone who can identify the burglar is asked to call El Cerrito police at (510) 215-4414 Ext. 40.
