Man in wheelchair blows himself up with pipe bomb in Oakland, dies
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Oakland police confirmed a man in a wheelchair died in a fatal explosion Tuesday evening at a clinic located on International Boulevard.
Police say the incident happened at around 6:30 p.m. and is being investigated as a suicide.
A source told KTVU the man rolled up to a clinic at 1030 International Blvd. and that it was a pipe bomb that caused the fatal explosion. The San Antonio Neighborhood Health Center is at that location. The explosives detonated inside, but no one else was hurt.
Witnesses reported that the adult male in a wheelchair entered the clinic with what appeared to be a pipe bomb. According to Oakland police this was an isolated incident.
Oakland Fire Department and emergency medical services responded to the scene.
Oakland P.D. and Alameda County Sheriff's Department bomb squads checked to see if there were any secondary devices, but found nothing and said the scene was clear.
