Man with knife prompts closure of Los Gatos school

A man with a large knife and a gas can who threatened sheriff's deputies west of Los Gatos Monday morning, prompted a nearby elementary school to close for the day, sheriff's and school district officials said.

Deputies responded around 6:50 a.m. to the area of Black Road after a man crashed a vehicle into either his own or a family member's property, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. James Jensen said.

The suspect, who is apparently suffering from mental health problems, was armed with the knife and gas can and threatened deputies while telling them to shoot him, Jensen said.

Crisis intervention-trained deputies and negotiators responded to talk to the man, Jensen said. He said there are no hostages at the scene and the man had not been taken into custody as of 8:45 a.m.

Nearby Lakeside Elementary School at 19621 Black Road has shut down for the day because of safety concerns and the street closures caused by the incident, Lakeside Joint School District interim superintendent Lisa Gonzales wrote on Twitter.
