Mayor Schaaf: 'Donald Trump is just a hater'

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is standing by a tweet she sent Wednesday saying, "The most dangerous place in America is Donald Trump's mouth."

Mayor Schaaf tweeted the statement after Donald Trump said some unfavorable things about the crime rate in Oakland.

In an interview with the New York Times, Donald Trump suggests that Oakland is one of the most dangerous places in the world.

He was asked what was the most dangerous place he'd ever been to.

Trump laughed, and replied "Brooklyn."

He then went on to say. "There are places in America that are among the most dangerous in the world. You go to places like Oakland, or Ferguson. The crime numbers are worse. Seriously."

Mayor Schaff sat down with KTVU for an interview Thursday. She stood by her tweet saying, "Donald Trump is just a hater. He hates on women. He hates on minorities. He hates on immigrants. All the things that make Oakland a great city. I'm so proud to be in Oakland and I don't want to let that type of mis-characterization go without a response."

We did some fact checking on crime in Oakland. We looked at the most recent FBI crime statistics.

In 2014, there were 6,900 violent crimes in Oakland, and 80 homicides.

By comparison, according to the FBI, Miami and New Orleans, which both have about the same population as Oakland, each had more homicides.

Miami had 81 and New Orleans had 150.
