SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) The San Francisco medical examiner's office has identified a woman fatally shot by police Thursday in the Bayview District as 29-year-old Jessica Williams, according to a statement issued this evening.
Her family has been notified, an autopsy has been conducted to document the cause of death, and a final report is forthcoming, according to the medical examiner's office.
Williams was killed around 9:45 a.m. Thursday after police allegedly observed her driving a stolen vehicle on Elmira Street.
She attempted to flee, according to police, but crashed the vehicle.
Williams tried to drive the vehicle forward and backward as officers moved to detain her. A sergeant, who has not yet been identified, fired a single shot - fatally striking Williams.
She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital and pronounced deceased.
Activists and journalists gathered at City Hall, and later that day Mayor Ed Lee announced the resignation of Police Chief Greg Suhr.
Toney Chaplin, who formerly served as a deputy chief, has been appointed acting chief until Suhr's permanent replacement can be selected.
