Metro Detroit immigrant deported to Mexico after 30 years in US
DETROIT (WJBK) - After 30 years in Detroit, Jorge Garcia said goodbye to his family as he complied with a deportation order back to Mexico on Monday morning.
Garcia cried as he held each heartbroken family member at Detroit Metropolitan airport, as onlookers stood nearby with signs reading "stop separating families."
The 39-year-old was brought to the United States by an undocumented family member when he was 10 years old - just two years too old to qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, reports Michigan United.
He has been facing an order of removal since 2009, but the Obama Administration granted him stays. Now that they Trump Administration is cracking down on illegal immigrants, he was ordered to be deported back to Mexico.
They say Garcia's wife, Cindy, was told he wouldn't be able to return to Detroit for 10 years, but they are working to bring him back to Detroit faster. His supporters say he has no criminal record. Garcia leaves behind his wife and two children, who are U.S. citizens.
