Motorcyclist dies in Fremont accident

A motorcyclist died in Fremont Wednesday morning  in an accident that prompted the shutdown of an Interstate Highway 680 off-ramp and a main thoroughfare in the city, police said.

The California Highway Patrol initially received a request by Fremont police around 6:30 a.m. to close the southbound Highway 680 off-ramp to Mission Boulevard for an investigation.

About an hour later, Fremont police wrote on Twitter that the closure of the off-ramp and westbound Mission Boulevard at Brown Road was related to a hit-and-run investigation involving a motorcycle and another vehicle.

Police said shortly after 9 a.m. that the motorcyclist, a man believed to be a San Jose resident in his 20s, succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators have contacted the registered owner of the vehicle that struck the motorcyclist and a second person allegedly involved, and they are cooperating in the case. Police did not release any other details about either person.

Delays are expected in the area until around noontime as a result of the investigation into the crash, police said.
