New theme for this year's 'BBQ 'N While Black' event at Lake Merritt

Community leaders are hosting the 2nd annual "BBQ 'N While Black" event at Lake Merritt tomorrow. On Saturday's Mornings on 2, organizers came to KTVU to discuss the big gathering.

They say they now want to distance themselves from why the party started in the first place.

Last year's party stemmed from the 'Barbecue Becky' incident, in which a woman called police to try to stop two African American men from using a charcoal barbecue at the Lake.

People later organized the 'BBQ 'N While Black' Party last July.

Organizers now want to make it an annual event that celebrates positivity and the East Bay African American community.

KTVU"s Frank Mallicoat was joined in studio by Jhamel Robinson and Logan McWilliams.
