A patient on the way to a psychiatric hospital was killed on Labor Day after jumping out of an ambulance and getting struck by oncoming traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP issued a Sig-Alert on Monday about 8 a.m. on southbound Interstate Highway 680 at Interstate 580 West.

The coroner was called to the scene at 8:08 a.m., according to the CHP log.

CHP officers said they spoke with two drivers who hit the patient. The patient was being transported from Valley Care hospital in Pleasanton to John George Psychiatric Hospital in San Leandro, the CHP said.

Officers are trying to figure out how the patient was able to jump put.

"We're still trying to piece the puzzle together," said Officer Josh Roberts.
