Piedmont Boy Scouts to begin holiday tree sale with 'tap dancing Christmas trees'

PIEDMONT, Calif. (BCN) - The Piedmont Boy Scouts will be honing their leadership and teamwork skills starting Saturday as they begin their annual holiday tree sale, organizers said.
The sale starts at 9 a.m. at 890 Moraga Ave., which is adjacent to Coaches Field.
At 11 a.m. the East Bay's own Tap Dancing Christmas Trees will perform, a group that has performed at tree-lighting ceremonies and also at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Several other scouting groups participate in the sale including the Cub Scouts and the co-ed Venturing and Exploring groups, among others.
The sale started 48 years ago in 1969 in the parking lot at Corpus Christi Catholic Church school in Piedmont, according to organizers.
But after a couple of years, the sale grew too big.
The annual event has drawn some famous people including Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant, who stopped and talked to the scouts last year.
Money raised from the sale goes toward the Boy Scout council's operating budget, which helps pay for youth activities all year long.
The lot will be open until Dec. 21 or until all the trees are gone.
Organizer Terry Lee said the trees are from Oregon and the cream of the crop.
One of the favorites is the Red Fir or silver tip tree.
"They go pretty quickly," Lee said.
The scouts will even deliver the tree for a fee.
Trees start at $25 for a 4-foot tabletop and go up to about $120 for the largest tree. Garlands and wreaths will also be available for sale, Lee said.
The lot is open Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Tree deliveries are made on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends.
