Pipe bomb dropped off at fire station near Danville

Hazmat and bomb crews detonated a pipe bomb on Tuesday, which a fire official said had no malicious intent behind it.

The Contra Costa County sheriff's department shut down  Lusitano Street between Camino Tassajara and Cashmere Street about 11:25 a.m. for a "pipe bomb incident." The road reopened less than an hour later.

San Ramon Valley Fire Battalion Chief Daniel McNamara told KTVU that someone had dropped off what appeared to be fireworks at a fire station about 9:30 a.m. because the owners didn't want to own the pyrotechnics anymore. When crews went to investigate, it appeared as though a pipe bomb was in the mix. Bomb crews took care of the device without any incident.

"There was no malicious intent," McNamara said.
