Police fatally shoot armed man in Sunnyvale

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KTVU and wires) - Authorities in Sunnyvale on Thursday afternoon confirmed that police have fatally shot a suspect armed with a knife at an apartment complex on the 1200 block Ayala Drive.

Shortly after noon, officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the Palms Villa Apartments on Ayala Drive near South Bernardo Avenue, public safety Capt. Jeff Hunter said.

A female adult family member had reported a sexual assault had just occurred at the residence.

Officers arrived on scene and were confronted by the suspect armed with a knife who charged towards them. 

Three officers fired their weapons at close range striking the suspect.  

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later was pronounced deceased. 

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was the half brother of the victim who called in the attack.

None of the officers were injured, Hunter said. The three officers who fired their weapons are on routine paid administrative leave.
